Downsizing in Nillumbik (Andrew Lemon) @ Eltham Central Pavilion
May 22 @ 9:30 am – 11:00 am

An article last year in CopperLine News struck a chord. Where, it asked, do our ageing residents go if the time comes to leave their family home but they still want to live in Nillumbik? A small meeting of local residents got together to discuss the matter and an informal group called Downsizing in Nillumbik emerged. They have started exploring solutions to what is self-evidently a shortage of housing for the aged in this Shire, asking how to alleviate this without spoiling the area that we all love. Federal and State governments, responding to a much broader housing crisis, are looking for broad scale solutions, and these have local ramifications.

In this talk, Andrew Lemon will discuss the issues, considering how Nillumbik’s housing mix has developed and what the future might bring. Housing is a big political and social issue in Australia today but, being Nillumbik, the problems present themselves here in a unique way.

Nillumbik Council has recently released a draft Housing Strategy and is inviting feedback. Closing date: 27th May.
